News date: 12/05/2009

Marlins Andrew Ford and Matthew Stephenson set the pace for the Gryphons at the University Challenge Cup.

The Guelph Gryphons swimming team competed in the University Challenge Cup tonight, hosted by the University of Toronto. The University Challenge Cup coincides with the Canada Cup of Swimming and is a one-day University invitational meet.

The Gryphon men finished fourth out of eight teams - finishing behind U of T, Calgary and Alberta. It was a significant improvement for the Gryphon men who finished 8th last year at the event.

Leading the way for the men was second-year Andrew Ford (Guelph, Ont.) who won the 100 and 200m IM races, and also set a meet record in the 200IM with a time of 2:04.23.

Second-year Matthew Stephenson (Brantford, Ont.) also broke a meet record in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:03.70.

On the women’s side, the Gryphons finished 8th overall in a very tough and deep field.
