Awesome Swimming by Marlins at OUA Division Championships

News date: 11/17/2009

The University of Guelph swimming team finished third overall at the Campbell Divisional Championships, hosted by Guelph from November 14-15. Overall the Gryphons won 15-of-38 events and 3-of-6 relays.

This year, the divisions were changed from previous years, adding perennial powerhouse the University of Toronto Varsity Blues into the mix for the first time in several years.

Marlins Andrew Ford, Matthew Stephenson, Scott Van Doormaal, Bethany Flemington and Chantique Payne, competing as members of the varsity team, had outstanding swims.

With the combined score from the men's and women's teams, Guelph placed third behind the McMaster Marauders and Toronto.

On the men’s side, second-year Andrew Ford led the team winning the 400IM, 200back, 200IM and 100 back and was on the winning team of the 4 X 50 free.

Stand-out performances also came from Matthew Stephenson, a second-year team member, who won the 200 breast and also finished second in the 400IM and 100 breaststroke, and third in the 50 breast.

Fifth-year veteran Scott Van Doormaal performed well once again for the team winning the 400 free and placing second in three events including the 1500 free, 200 back and 200 fly. He was also a member of the third place 4 x 100 free relay team.

On the women’s side, first-year Bethany Flemington won the 50 and 200 back and was second in the 100 free and 50 fly events, while also competing on two winning relays teams (4 x 50 medley & 4 x 100 free).

Third-year Chantique Payne won three individual events including the 100 fly, 50 free and 200IM. She also finished second in the 100 back and was a member of two winning relays (4 X 50 medley and 4 X 100 free).
