The Gryphon men’s and women’s swimming team dueled the Toronto Varsity Blues and Waterloo Warriors on Oct. 4 in Waterloo.

Overall the Gryphon men finished second to Toronto and victorious over Waterloo, while the women tied Waterloo and were second to Toronto. This is the first time in three years the Gryphon men’s team defeated Waterloo. Meanwhile, the women were competing with only 14 of their 18 member team, a very solid start for the season.

The team capped off the day with a win for both the men’s and women’s medley relays.

On the men’s team, Marlins Andrew Ford and Matthew Stephenson led the way with Andrew setting a new pool record and first place in the 200 IM and just missed the pool record by less than a second winning the 200 freestyle.  Matthew was first in the 200 breast and third in the 50 breast.

On the women’s side, Marlin Chantique Payne won the 50 fly, coming close to establishing a new pool record.  It was a one-two punch in the 100 freestyle, with Marlin Bethany Flemington taking the gold and Chantique the silver.  Bethany also grabbed two more gold medals and a silver medal, setting new pool records in the 50 back and 100 IM and placing second in the 200 IM.
